Abstract

In the first part of his study the author presents, within a general framework, the external policies of Russia towards the Ottoman Empire and the fulfilment of the Greeks’ desire for liberation from the Turkish yoke during the second half of the 18th century. In the second part he studies the main points in the biography of
the Ecumenical Patriarch Seraphim II (1757-1761) which are related to the external politics of Russia, in order to establish his reputation as a Russophile.
