Abstract

The philanthropical activities of a committee founded in July 1876 in
Plovdiv by several foreign consuls, including the Greek, Athanasios Matalas,
are considered in this paper. The committee’s aim was to give some material
support to those left destitute by the Bulgárián people’s Aprii ’76 insurrection
against Turkish domination. During its nine-month life, up to the beginning
of the Turkish-Russian war, the committee provided long-term relief or onetime
aid to more than 2,500 people, mainly widows and children. This activity,
like any other human work on behalf of universal solidarity, left a deep mark
in the grateful memory of the Bulgárián people.
