Abstract

The attitude of Eleftherios Venizelos, member of the executive committee
of autonomous Crete, during the Balkan crisis, October 1908, coincided in
the beginning with the line drawn by the greek government, that is in favor
of the immediate déclaration of the Union of the island with Greece. At the
same time, beyond the immediate aspirations, he tried to find the means to
secure the more generál presumptions which would enable thè integration of
the nation. In view of this need, should he take advantage of the promises of thè neo-turkish regime for an equality in civic rights among thè nations of
thè Empire or should he try to create a common front of thè balkan nations
against-Turkey? In thè beginning he will turn himself towards thè first direction,
but after thè prédominance of thè nationalistic trends among thè Young
Turks, he will turn himself towards the second solution and he will try to
approach Bulgaria.
