Abstract

This is a comparative study of the structure of the agricultural sector of
two neighboring countries.
There are many common elements, as both countries were under Ottoman
occupation for more than four centures. But their economie development
was not always the same.
The main points of this article concern:
1. The role of the agricultural sector in the whole national economy, a very
important factor in both countries.
2. The size of the agricultural holdings, which also had social repercussions: thè Bulgariatis mostly favored small land holdings. In Greece, there was
a dual systém: in the provinces that were liberated first, small land holdings
predominated ; in the provinces liberated later (especially in Thessaly
and Arta) land holdings were mostly large (Tsifliks).
3. The agricultural credit was created earlier in Bulgaria than in Greece.
4. The commercialization of agricultural products developed on a much
greater scale in Greece than in Bulgaria, where a home-consumption
economy prevailed.
