This paper investigates the effect of teaching on the formation of personality and the development of the student’s higher mental functions in the pedagogical context of the school. More specifically, adopting Lev Vygotsky’s cultural historical theory, an attempt is made to roughly reify the concept of “personality”.
First, the higher mental functions and consciousness are approached, and then, the function of teaching. In particular, the contribution of teaching to the formation of higher mental functions and consciousness is highlighted, with reference to the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and the way in which the various school subjects affect the child’s mental development. Finally, the procedures through which teaching can not only have a formative character for the pupil’s personality but also contribute to the development of their higher mental functions are presented.
