Περίληψη

This study focuses on primary school students’ geometrical thinking about of the concepts of surface and area. A literature review provides the theoretical framework within which we try to investigate the development of students’ strategies in a number of tasks which involved the concept of area. In this small scale research study, two students of the fifth grade of primary school worked collaboratively and engaged in activities which encouraged them to develop their own strategies to measure the area of geometrical shapes. The findings indicate that the students develop mainly the method of division of the given shape into unit squares while students’ difficulties with the concept of measurement of length became an obstacle.
