The aim of this study was to provide evidence on effective leadership and its impact on school improvement by exploring the international discourse in the field. For this purpose, a literature review on the topic was conducted. Based on the review of the secondary sources, the following findings can be drawn. The critical feature in differentiating leadership from administration and management is that leadership involves a process of influence over the members of the school organization, which aims at the achievement of the school vision. Leadership is one of the factors which contribute to school improvement by having indirect effect on conditions that influence students’ performance. Moreover, the literature review revealed leadership practices that are deemed to be effective, which, however, are related to school leaders’ ability to successfully combine these practices as well as to their flexibility to shift between different leadership models in accordance to the school context.
