Περίληψη

The present paper attempts to bibliographically cover the Automated Essay Assessment, a particular emerging assessment technique, which has recently introduced as a technological alternative to the traditional student essays’ assessment technique, conducted by humans. Many software programs or platforms have recently been developed, which are underpinning the educational process and used for the assessment of essays in large scale examinations. The paper starts by presenting the topic of the evaluation in education, followed by analyzing the significant importance of essay writing in the process of developing linguistic, cognitive, mental and social characteristics to the students. The topic of the traditional assessment of students’ performance in the free written expression, as it is performed by human, is presented as well, as well as the topic of Automated Essay Assessment, as it is described in the international literature. Automated Essay Assessment platforms present many advantages and have won many supporters, but, on the other hand, have also cause several objections and many adversaries have raised serious arguments against their usage. The paper, finally, concludes by listing the most important findings that occur from the critical comparison between the traditional and the automated essay assessment.
