Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility constitutes a powerful tool for Greek Banks forthe development and formulation of their public image. However, many timesthis does not conform to socially accepted practices in the management of theirhuman resources. In this current phase of economic crisis and restructuring inthe banking sector some crucial issues have emerged. A major one is the problemof supporting and encouraging the employment of elder employees in a frame-work of practices, principles and values, which embed internationally acceptedstandards emanating from CSR and HR management. Balancing the public imageof banks in relation to a difficult social reality regarding the issue of elder bankemployees goes through the formulation of a consultation and social dialoguesystem including all social factors involved. In this article we propose the devel-opment of a structured system for public consultation and social dialogue basedon primary research on a weighted sample of elder employees and managers ofbanks, as well as trade unions heads. This system will comprehensively addressthe issue of active ageing in the banking sector by proposing effective actionsand solutions per policy area: awareness, using awareness indicators, maintainingemployment and supporting career pathways, combating stereotypes related toage, etc. The proposed consultation system aims to increase transparency, colle-giality and quality in decision making processes. The consultation system is gov-erned by general principles, stages, fields and levels of social dialogue and takesinto account the conditions for the development of social dialogue mechanism. The authors believe that the system proposed is also applicable in other branches(provided necessary adaptations are made); therefore it provides a useful tool forapplying a policy dealing with worsening labour relations in the context of cur-rent circumstances.
