Abstract

Cruise tourism is one of the major components of Greek tourism and tends to be asignificant source of income. In recent years, there has been an increase of cruisetourism in Greece. The objective of this study is to provide better understanding ofthe cruise industry by considering the factors that influence passengers’spendingduring their cruise trip around the Greek islands. This study relies on a uniquesample of 507 cruise passengers who visited Greece by analysing the variablesthat affect cruise passengers’ choice of how they spend their money. Participantswere asked to answer various questions about their cruise experience and toprovide information about their demographic characteristics. Ordered logit modelswere used to describe passengers’ likelihood to spend more at port cities, on thecruise ship and during their cruise trip in general. The demographic factors showthat the probability of spending more during the cruise trip decreases by 19.2%(p=0.097) with passengers’ age. Additionally, there is a positive correlation betweenspending during the cruise trip and the choice of cabin and a negative correlationbetween spending and passengers’ reason for visiting Greece and having the cruiseexperience. We also found that there is a negative correlation when it comes tofrequency of travelling and a positive correlation between spending and Excursionsmade at port cities during the trip.
