Convergence of the per capita income in the prefectures of Greece

Κώστας Συριόπουλος, Λόης Λαμπριανίδης, Δημήτριος Αστερίου

The article is focused on the issue of convergence in per capita income in the Prefectures of Greece. It applies the empirical methodology advanced by Barro and Sala-i-Martin (1990,1991). The research results confirm those of a similar study that tested the issue of convergence on a regional level in Greece. In both cases the forecasts of the neoclassical model were not confirmed. Furthermore, the paper discusses the shape of regional problem in Greece as well as the causes of the failure of the regional policies that have been implemented so far. The existence of similar trends in other EU member states calls for a deeper understanding of the issue of convergence.
