Abstract

The main problem that European rural areas, mainly the most peripheral ones, face today has to do with their demographic characteristics. Hence, what they need most is the revitalization of their population. The recent in migration to rural areas is selective, as regards the characteristics of those that migrate there as well as the rural areas where this phenomenon occurs. The contribution of in migrants to the development of rural areas is important mainly due to their qualitative characteristics: they have urban experiences (which makes them more competent to act as agents of change), they are more educated, they appreciate nature more, etc. The intensity of in migration as well as the contribution of in migrants to the development of rural areas differs substantially between different European countries. In migration, though with a delay, it seems that it reached contemporary Greece too. The in migration phenomenon seems to be extremely important in the case of Zagoroxoria in the Pindos mountain in northern Greece, that is analysed here.
