Abstract

The concept of sustainable development has induced a systematic scientific endeavor for its operationalization and practical application. This endeavor, among others, has been taken the direction of creating indicators for evaluating and describing sustainable development. This endeavor partially reflects the inadequacy of traditional indicators (GNP, value added etc.) to cover all aspects of sustainable development. The present paper concern sustainable development indicators at local level and especially on the level of local communities in Greece. The relevant indicators could be used for planning and evaluation purposes and therefore they may be useful policy tool.
