The objective of this paper is to examine the extent to which the flexible specialisation model for industrialisation constitutes a viable and applicable strategy for small-scale industry in the Greek plastics sector. In order to examine the validity of the flexibility approach, i.e. the notion that craft production can provide a dynamic, efficient and innovative alternative mode of production paradigm to the fordist system of mass production, the discussion on small-scale plastics firms focusses on:
1) The analysis of the present situation of small plastics firms and their
role within the Greek economy.
2) The identification of their strengths and weaknesses during the
recession.
3) The speculation on their future prospects, and finally
4) the role of industrial policy in enhancing competitiveness along the
lines of flexibility.
