This article examines the character, the institutional framework and the perspectives of European regional policy, with the aim to evaluate the actual prospects for the promotion of economic and social cohesion of the Community and the perspectives for the development of the less favoured regions. First, it presents the issue of regional inequalities and the successive steps towards the formulation of a European regional policy. Second, it examines the issue of cohesion in relation to the process of integration (Single Market and European Union) and the extent of the administrative powers of the Commission (subsidiarity principle). Finally, it deals with the lack of adequate mechanisms for the redistribution of development and the achievement of cohesion at the Community level.Downloads
