General Scope
The electronic journal “Culture-Borders-Gender/Studies” is an annual periodical, open-
access publication of the Culture, Borders and Gender Laboratory of the Department of
Balkan, Slavic and Oriental Studies at the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Greece.
The journal aspires to become a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue between
epistemological traditions and thematic fields, such as Sociocultural Anthropology,
Gender Studies, Border Studies, Cultural Studies (literature, art, cinema and digital
technologies), and Minority, Migration and Refugee Studies.
The journal hosts studies in Greek and English, which are subject to a peer review
process and operate as an open-access publication supported by the library of the
University of Macedonia. This choice explicitly substantiates the fundamental priority of
the Culture, Borders and Gender Laboratory, which is disseminating the produced
scientific knowledge in the public sphere. This political position promotes creating and
sharing knowledge as a project of academic commitment and social responsibility
towards the community. Our objective is to provide critical knowledge about Area
Studies, an alternative understanding of social reality and encourage the potential of co-
handling it.

readability and language. However, they must review and edit AI-generated
content.
● Disclosure: It should be disclosed if AI is used for anything other than the
purposes analysed above. A statement will be included in the published work.
Language
American and British English are accepted, but not a mixture.
Language Bias
Authors should minimise bias in gendered language and when referring to racial and
ethnic identities. Here are some guidelines:
● Avoid Gendered Language: Use terms like “individuals,” “people,” or
“persons” instead of “man” to refer to all human beings.
● Singular "They": Use "they", "them", "theirs", etc., when the gender of a
person is unknown or irrelevant so as not to make assumptions about their
gender. For more information on gender and pronoun usage, please refer to the
APA style guide.
● Avoid False Hierarchies: Do not use one group as a standard against which
others are judged as the “default” group. Avoid terms like “normal” that could
stigmatize others that, by comparison, could be considered as “not normal”. Do
not put groups in order of social dominance by default ("men and women",
"locals and migrants"); instead, consider other options (alphabetical order, sample
size) and try to maintain consistency throughout your text.
● Racial and Ethnic Identity: Keep in mind that terms used to refer to racial and
ethnic groups change over time. Use respectful and current terms for racial and
ethnic groups. Refer to the APA Style Guidelines for further reference.
