2022 marked 100 years since the largest refugee movement in modern Greek history. The arrival
and settlement of nearly one million Christian refugees in Greece and the departure of half a
million Muslims from the country profoundly shaped Greek society, which has since experienced
repeated waves of refugee and migration flows. Through the 100memories research project,
conducted at the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation,
we aim to highlight a history of mobility to and from Greece throughout the 20th century. In this
text, we outline the research axes of our project and, through diverse snapshots from the past 100
years, attempt to reconstruct a mosaic of mobility in the city of Thessaloniki, focusing on the
Upper Town (Ano Poli) and the area around the new Railway Station.
