Abstract

The article focuses on a series of articles published in the daily Efimeris ton Valkanion (Newspaper
of the Balkans) in 1933 that presented the neighborhoods of Ano Poli in Thessaloniki. Ano Poli
housed during the Interwar period many 1922 refugees. Through the articles two major turning
points were spotted. The auctioning of the exchangeable property transformed the area. At the
same time the high unemployment that had struck the city and particularly Ano Poli brought a
collapse of the living standards. In the article I also comment on mentalities’ changes and public
discourses that were traced in the articles, mainly on women’s labor and feminism, orientalism
and racism.
