Περίληψη

The paper seeks to highlight certain aspects of learning foreign languages (obligatory by choice) at state schools. Greece, being a member of the EU, accepts the European language policy that every citizen should be able to speak two foreign languages in addition to their mother tongue. Thus, learning foreign languages is part of the school curriculum throughout general education, from primary to high school. The languages offered are English (obligatory), German and French (obligatory by choice). However, most families pay for their children to learn foreign languages in addition to school because social assessment of foreign language teaching in state schools is not the best. Findings of a nationwide research (school year 2010/11, 2011/12) conducted by means of written questionnaires (6376) from students (two groups) of all levels of education provide insights into students’ language choice, skills and wishes, which give first-hand information of school practices concerning FL learning.
