The present study focuses on the adolescent reader and makes use of the eminent Greek novel Eroica, written by Kosmas Politis, to offer insight into the adolescent’s relation with literary texts and into the making of a reader during adolescence, as well as into adolescence as a developmental period. Eroica is perhaps the most representative Greek novel on adolescence, and one of the most important novels worldwide regarding this period. More specifically, the aims of the present study are the following: (a) to identify and critically present the main developmental (cognitive, moral, social, emotional, and psychodynamic) features of adolescence, as expressed mainly by the main character of Eroica; (b) to discuss adolescents’ typical reception of literature and the reading criteria used by them; (c) to examine the reception of Eroica by the adolescent reader; and (d) to underline the value and the use of this novel for adolescents. The framework of the present study consists of theoretical models of developmental psychology, various psychoanalytic approaches, and theories of literary response and reading.
