Abstract

This paper investigates and tests empirically convergence as well as the evolution of inequalities across regions of Greece between 1961 and 1991. Convergence is defined not only in terms of economic indicators, but also in terms of social and quality of life indicators. Real convergence or divergence between ten regions of Greece is computed by evaluating a coefficient of variation based on economic and quality of life variables. Regional rankings, based on the values of a composite quality of life index, are also constructed. The results confirm that real convergence was achieved in Greece between 1961-91. It is then confirmed that Central Greece improved its relative position significantly, whereas Aigian islands and Western Greece worsened theirre lative position.
