Abstract

The first part of article analyses the specific characteristics of the social and environmental impacts of tourist development. Emphasis is put especially on the case of small towns with tourist development. In the second part we describe firstly the characteristics of these towns and propose a typology, based mainly on their level of tourism development. Then we indicate the factors which lead them to be depended on tourism. Finally we conclude by proposing measures and policies which can contribute to a more balanced tourist development of these small towns.
