Abstract

In this paper we examine the regional employment changes in the European Union during the period 1995-1999. In the first section the contemporary regional inequality in employment rates and employment growth in the European Union is presented. The next section discusses the main developments of the European Union towards the policy for employment creation. After a brief description of the method applied for the analysis (shift-share analysis) we present the changes in regional employment over the period, with particular emphasis on (fie components of those changes. The European regions are grouped according the Boubeville classification and some policy priorities are proposed for each one of them. A special reference is made for the Greek regions.
