Abstract

The paper examines the contemporary Geography of the greek agro-food industry, in the framework of the delayed and abrupt internationalization process of the sector. The analysis focuses on the backward linkages of the sector with primary production, the level of internationalization, as well as, at representative forms of geographical and productive restructuring adopted by firms activating in Greece. The synthesis of the partial analyses reveals drastic transformations on long-term morphological features and the geographical organization of the sector. The isolated local agro-food firm integrating all stages of production into a single factory, procuring agri-inputs exclusively from its surrounding area with a local orientation, is rather the exception than the rule. It has been replaced by modern enterprises linkages intensive activating in several food sub-sectors with unprecedented spatial flexibility and mobility. Their Success is due, to a great extent, to the transcend of various technical limitations set by the nature of food and their ability to control and coordinate activities in extended geographical areas.
