Abstract

This paper presents a special application case of the Analysis SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) in spatial and development planning, i.e. the process of ecotourist planning of Polichnitos, Lesvos, on the basis of the salt produced locally and the newly created Salt Museum. The crucial element of this process, - as it resulted from an international research project- is the integrated and documented use and application of the SWOT analysis. The article discusses thoroughly the potential creative use of SWOT analysis, together with its weaknesses and limitations. SWOT analysis has been widely applied to business management and marketing, whereas its use in areas such as environmental, regional planning and evaluation, planning and evaluation of institutions and actions taken in sectors like health, social welfare, education etc, is quite recent.
