Abstract

The interest of most academics studying alternative tourism is mainly focused on the negative impacts of mass tourism paying less attention on the real concepl of alternative tourism. It is the aim of this paper to complete past tourism research negligence on the study of alternative tourism by studying the differential characteristics of alternative tourism that are focused on areas such as: the incentives and the norms of alternative tourists, the distinctiveness of alternative tourism destinations, the size of tourist enterprises, the institutionalisation of the trip, the endogenous tourism development and the involvement of the local community in the development process.
