Abstract

The need to apply non-market, economic valuation techniques for assessing the range of environmental damages begins slowly to emerge also within the institutions of EU. We need therefore an informed public discussion on the validity and appropriateness of these techniques, especially concerning their application in Greece. In the present paper the analytical base of valuation is presented before the experience gathered until now is discussed. The institutional barries and possibilities for their application in Greece is also considered. It is argued that the merit of such methods lies, inter alia, in the role they can play in the decision-making process and in making explicit hidden assumptions, unspoken trade-offs and value judgements in the public environmental disputes.
