I. The Comprehensive Secondary School [C.S.S.] in Britain was established twenty years ago, in the hope: (1) to provide education suitable for all children. (2) to achieve equality of opportunity. (3) to promote social cohesion and (4) to provide more freedom and democracy in the schools. II. Evaluation of the achievements of the C.S.S.: (1) More young people than before continue their education beyond the school leaving age, but inequality between social classes remains obstinately constant. (2) The philosophy of "progressive education» has influenced many of the C.S.S. to some extent. (3) The new excellent curriculum and examination system has not been put in general practice for several reasons. (4) The majority of pupils and their parents are not fully satisfied with the C.S.S., and recently has been an increase in applications for admission to private schools; but the great majority of British people do not wish to return to the selective school system of the past. (5) Teachers with sound teaching experience in schools are discontented from the C.S.S., though teachers who believe in it are generally contented; both groups, however, find a teacher's life in a C.S.S. very exhaustive. (6) The Government -Labor or Conservative- has never been satisfied with the C.S.S., because it fails to meet the needs of British industry, and the distrust between Government and teachers has never been so deep as it is today. However, in spite of failures and disappointments promising beginnings have been made.
