Περίληψη

An experiment was conducted in order to examine the degree of understanding Mathematics by students who have graduated the second class of the high school, and are preparing to follow university studies. The students were collected from four urban high schools, two from Thessaloniki and two from Katerini. They were examined in four series of topics of equal difficulty. The students’ performance was evaluated by two different measures, the conventional one, used in the Greek high schools, which uses a climax from 0 to 20, and a modification of the climax proposed by J. Malone. Both methods of measuring lead to the conclusion that 40% of students who will follow branch A (Mathematics, Physics, Polytechnic schools etc) and 75% of students who will follow branch D (Economics) cannot be considered as well qualified to follow these branches, where Mathematics is the basic course.
