Περίληψη

There is evidence that the Greek educational system is in a crisis. This article, therefore, sets out to identify some of the main inadequacies of the Greek primary school, and to offer some suggestions as to how Greek primary school, and to offer some suggestions as to how Greek primary education can be improved. The main recommendations are: a) gradual and progressive decentralization, b) in-service training, c) teacher appraisal, d) upgrading of the role of the teacher, e) parental involvement in schooling f) appointment of especially trained teachers for special classes and one-teacher schools, g) more financial resources for education, h) a longer school day, i) teachers should also offer some subject expertise, j) all the stages between 3 1/2 - 15 (nursery, primary, junior high school) should be incorporated in one school unit, k) provision of schools with books, modern technological equipment, and i) the use of non-teaching staff.
