Περίληψη

The present paper attempts to examine the factors which constitute English Language Teaching (ELT), particularly English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Tilburg University of Holland and Copenhagen University - Copenhagen Business School of Denmark, through a questionnaire. Due to the limited number of the sample the questionnaire has not been submitted to statistic evaluation. This research is therefore of limited scope and does not aim to reach any general conclusions concerning ELT at Universities. However, from recording the results of the questionnaire, it would appear that ESP at Tilburg and Copenhagen Universities is more systematic and effective than at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The above finding may mean that certain modifications regarding the contact and methods of this subject are required at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and probably at other universities of Greece as well. The implementation of these modifications presupposes both the additional and in-service training of teaching staff. It was not considered to be useful to include statistic evaluation of the questionnaire results because of the limited number of questionnaires. In addition, examining the statistic significance of the results at this stage has not been of great interest, as this research constitutes a pilot study. Consequently, attempting to generalize from the findings might be considered as non-scientific.
