The present study deals with the interrelatedness between two aspects of personality, namely "possible selves" and "locus of control". Possible selves are regarded as the cognitive manifestations of enduring aspirations and motives, and are considered as the interface between motivation and self-concept. Subjects were 260 high school students attending state schools The Nowicki Strickland Locus of Control Scale and the Culture-free Self-Esteem Inventory were used for the measurement of locus of control and self-esteem respectively. In order to assess possible selves a guided imagery task was used, asking the subjects to imagine themselves in the future and write paragraphs describing their expected, hoped for or feared for selves. The results of the study have interesting implications for our present understanding of the relationships between the above mentioned aspects of personality. Respondents were quite likely to report mainly positive possible selves. Yet they seem to have a relatively constricted sense of possibility, both hoped for and feared for possibility. While the data do not designate specific interventions, they may have practical implications for the provision of a social support system available to adolescents.
