Περίληψη

This paper reports and analyses findings from an investigation into Cypriot teachers' and parents' perceptions of national policy for discipline in primary schools. Questionnaires were sent to a representative sample of Cypriot teachers randomly selected (n=340) from the total population and to a representative sample of parents randomly selected from the total population (n=2300). A response rate of 75% was obtained and statistical analysis was carried out by SPSS, Interviews with 15 teachers and 10 parents who replied to the questionnaire were also conducted in order to measure the validity of the research. There were eight main findings. First, discipline is regarded as educative by Cypriot teachers. They believe that their responsibility is to help children realize the importance of following regulations in a school situation. They also consider rule abiding in schools of vital importance, since it helps children to realize that everybody has the right to be respected. On the other hand, parents see discipline as an important element in the process of socialization. They support that it is important that children follow the school regulations, because in this way they learn to be obedient to those who support them.
