Περίληψη

Since the emergence of typography and the nation state, the development of education shows some striking resemblances to the way mass communication has been developing at he same time. The end result of this process was the establishment of these two institutions as the most important apparatuses of cultural homogenization and political socialization in modern societies. In this context, even though deeply antagonistic to each other, mass education and mass communication have developed an eclectic affinity, particularly with regards to the way they defined their popular pedagogic mission, as well as to the way they subverted and deformed the operation of the public sphere. The introduction of media education courses in the primary and secondary levels of the Greek school system is here proposed as a way to go beyond the authoritarian pedagogy and the realist epistemology which dominate both these two institutions, in the prospect of reviving the public sphere starting from the classroom itself. By contrast to the prophylactic and theoretical bias of early media education programmes and proposals, media education is here conceived as a means to develop the critical cultural literacy of the students, with the aim of enabling them to participate critically and creatively in the development of a pluralistic and democratic society.
