The purpose of the study was: (a) To investigate whether relationships with parents define a distinct self-perception domain (b| To investigate whether mother and father are identified as distinct sources of social support within the family environment (c) To examine the development differences of the relationships with parents as well as the development differences of the maternal and the paternal support (b) To examine the relations between the two sources of paternal support on one hand and the two aspects of self-concept self-perception and self esteem on the other hand. The finding with a sample of 410 Greek students in grades six to nine reveled that relationships with parents emerge as a distinct self-perception domain during adolescence and that students can make a clear distinction between maternal and parental support. Furthermore the findings of the study revealed the sex is not a differentiating factor of the level of the relationships with parents neither of the level of maternal and paternal support. In contrast, both the relationships with parents and the parental support decline from elementary to junior high school then showing a gradual leveling out. Among the two sources parental support maternal support bears the strongest relationship to self perception and the self esteem.
