The aim of the present study was to evaluate children's perceptions regarding peer re¬jection and feelings of loneliness. Recent studies claim that emerging peer social status in school predicts early adolescent and adult psycho social problems. Fifty five children aged 7 to 12 years old were interviewed individually and their interviews were taped. The con¬tent analysis of the material was assessed in relation 10 three factors: children's criteria for the definition of the peer rejection; children's attributions regarding rejected children's behavior and children's undemanding of feelings of loneliness and its relation to rejec¬tion. The results show that children seem to share a common base of attributions with the adults. Specifically, children relate the rejected behavior mainly with aggression and dis¬ruptive behavior. In addition, their attributions regarding the stability of the rejected behavior seem to favor ambivalent explanations. The findings are discussed within the attribution theory context.
