The article gives an overview of secondary education evaluation systems in eleven" European countries along several dimensions, such as the existence or not of evaluation in the first place, the criteria used for evaluating an education system, who evaluates, and the consequences of the evaluation. It is found that systems vary widely in their approach to evaluation, ranging from practically non-evaluation (Greece) to England's and the Netherlands' highly decentralized system. In spite of the diversity, the general trend over the years has been towards passing the evaluation from the hands of central government to local authorities, and ultimately to the parents. Also, the evaluation results are being used to determine teachers' salaries.
