Although it is a rare disorder, there are many teachers who come across students with Selective Mutism and are familiar with the frustration caused by these students' silence and resistance against any form of treatment. This article aims at providing information about Selective Mutism on one hand, and on the other, at presenting the steps that teachers can follow to handle a selectively mute student and at suggesting several interventions that can be applied in class.
