Περίληψη

Cooperative learning is considered to be an effective method for the development of children. Additionally, language teaching is widely based on the communicative approach, which was recently introduced by the Greek authorities. The combination of the two methods was examined on theoretical and practical level. Theoretically, it was found that the principles of cooperative learning support communicative -approaches. Both methods facilitate dynamic learning and acknowledge the cognitive, emotional and social needs of students. The interplay of the methods proved to be an effective tool in learning and leaching. In practice, organizing and experimentally implementing two thematic units in a 5th grade class in Nicosia, Cyprus tested the effects of cooperative Seaming and the communicative approach. Data analysis showed that the experimental group was more capable of interpreting the social situation, in which communication was taking place, and responding accordingly. Most importantly, increased responsibilities motivated children to develop meta-cognitive abilities and commit themselves towards their team and the class.
