Περίληψη

The European Dimension of Education (EDE) is a significant issue for current European education policy. The article presents the evolution of the interest and policies of the European Communities regarding education and training in general and the EDE in particular. Four periods of increasingly more active interest in education, as well as the current strategic emphasis on education as a means to reach the most advanced knowledge society, are briefly described. Furthermore, the concept of the EDE is analyzed in terms of: (a) its general scope, principles and goals; (b) its curriculum content; (c) its curriculum approach; (d) its relation to educational administration and organization. Different approaches to the issues are examined; more specif¬ically, the emphasis on the political, socio-cultural or economic dimensions leads to different views of the EDE. Similarly, the extent of students’ criti¬cal political action encouraged by schools is also a controversial issue. Finally, the writers express their belief that the European educational sys¬tems should seek a balance between their national and European dimen¬sions.
