Περίληψη

The adjustment of teaching in general and written language teaching in particular to the individual learning needs and the level of each student’s skills development constitute a challenge for the primary school teachers. The advanced students need learning experiences planned particularly for them. The main principles that govern the appropriate, for the advanced readers, written language teaching approaches are referred to the depth and the complexity of content and process, to the challenge and to the creativity. In this article differentiated instruction is proposed as an answer to the needs and the abilities of advanced readers. Differentiated teaching is defined conceptually and its dimensions and students’ characteristics which are taken into consideration are reported. Specific examples from the teaching process are given and some teaching approaches that support the differen¬tiation of language teaching are analysed.
