This paper applies discourse analysis to study the nature of interactions in a leaming-in-groups (LIG) approach, where students work together, discuss and provide explanations of some physical phenomena. The methodology inte¬grates qualitative and quantitative approaches. The coding process was carried out with the aid of ATLAS software and it followed a qualitative approach, where the categories were not predetermined, but they emerge from the process of analysis. The resulted codes were organized into two categories: The cog¬nitive interactions, which could be simple or higher order cognitive interactions and the social interactions. The cognitive content of the discourses along with two features, namely the diversity and the relative activity were shown to be characteristics of the effective groups. Moreover, some dynamical patterns of
discourse were revealed and correlated with the interactive-process effective¬ness. Finally, discussion is provided about LIG approach, group dynamics and methodological issues for social science research.
