Trans-contextual model (TCM) is an integrated theoretical model of motivation explaining the mechanisms through which school physical education can en¬hance leisure physical activity participation. According to the model autonomy support in physical education influences autonomous motives in physical ed¬ucation, which in turn, affect autonomous motives in leisure However, TCM has not incorporated basic psychological needs (BPN), an integral part of self- determination theory, so far. Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine the role of BPN in physical education in the formation of autonomous motiva¬tion in leisure physical activity. The sample of the study consisted of 318 high school students with a mean age of 14.6 years (S.D. = .73) who completed measures of autonomy support, basic psychological needs and motivational regulations in PE. One week later, the students completed measures of basic psychological needs and motivational regulations in leisure physical activity. The results of the analysis indicated that BPN mediate the effect of autonomous support on autonomous motivation in PE, and that autonomous motivation in PE, and that autonomous motivation in leisure. Further, the results showed that BPN in PE do not affect the corresponding needs in leisure. These findings provide important information on the effect of BPN in PE on physical activity participation and the role of PE teachers.
