This paper aimed at studying (a) the motives of professional development of Greek preschool teachers; (b) the effect of various demographic factors (i.e. age, experience, marital status, position and further education) on teachers’ motives; (c) which of these motives are able to predict the level of job satis¬faction of the preschool teachers. The 167 preschool teachers who participated in the study were asked to fill in (a) the Everard & Morris (1999) inventory about their professional motives, which is based on Herzberg’s theory of mo¬tivation, and (b) the inventory of job satisfaction for teachers (Koustelios & Kousteliou, 2001). Results showed that teachers regarded as the most important motives for their job the following, in descending order: personal development, job interest and attainment. Regarding the demographic factors, it was found that age, years of experience and marital status significantly determined teach¬ers’ motive of recognition. Finally, it was found that the motives of job interest and responsibility were significant predictors of job satisfaction in various dimensions of preschool teachers’ profession.
