Cognitive poetics, developed on the basis of cognitive linguistics and cognitive science in general, stresses the fact that the linguistic choices that form a liter¬ary work activate specific conceptual schemas in the reader, which relate di-
rectly to one’s cultural environment and fundamental perceptive processes of the human mind. Cognitive poetics thus examines textual structure, as well as inferences made by the readers based on both the text and their own experience. The contextual frame theory, in particular, which consists the main interest of this article, refers to the mental storing of information about the current context in a literary text, an active cognitive process performed when reading. The article presents the theoretical basis of the above approach to literary texts, while providing a teaching example of how it may be deployed to point out the importance of the readers’ cognitive processes as a vital part in literary meaning construction. In this light, contextual frame theory contributes in the central positioning of the reader/student in their creative conversing with literature.
