Περίληψη

The present study is exploratory and of an empirical nature and was earned out during the academic year 2008-2009 as part of the Teaching of Ancient Greek academic course. It aims at tracing and recording the beliefs of fourth year undergraduates of Philology and Philosophy/Education departments about the school subject of Ancient Greek language (“Thematography”) both included in the curriculum of the Greek Senior High school. The research methods used have been those of brainstorming and open-ended type ques¬tionnaires. Throughout a qualitative analysis of data it has been shown that, in general, fourth year undergraduate students tend to adopt a positive atti¬tude towards this particular course, although it has often been associated with negative feelings, with its main weakness emanating from its teacher- oriented, grammar-syntax method of teaching. For a more effective and suc¬cessful teaching of Ancient Greek they propose, instead, the use of a number of interactive, student-oriented techniques, such as group work, in an effort to implicate the students in the teaching and learning process.
