Περίληψη

Counseling in schools is fundamental because at any particular time, chil¬dren might need extra emotional support beyond the normal pastoral care offered by their teachers. Counseling, in general, meets the needs of students in three basic domains: academic development, career development, and personal/social development.
The aim of this qualitative study was to explore student’s views, studying in the school of Pedagogical and Technological education of Volos, for their counseling role in a school setting. Material and method: Focus groups of 6 students were held to explore their views on their counseling role in schools. The participants were divided into two groups in order to facilitate the focus group interviews. The qualitative data derived from the interviews, was ana¬lyzed using thematic categories and coding. Results: From data analysis of the focus group interviews, six thematic categories emerged. In accordance with student’s views in this study “the helping role of counseling in various situations”, “lack of training in counseling”, obstacles in the practice of counseling”, “ counseling skills for teachers”, “ limits for the counseling role of a teacher”, “insufficient support of teachers from counseling institutions" were identified as the thematic categories.
Conclusions: The results of the study indicated that students were not par¬ticularly satisfied with the quality of their counseling training. In addition, it is apparent the necessity to foster the counseling role of the teacher in a school setting.
