Περίληψη

The need for better preparation of students so that they can cope with the challenges of a rapidly changing world has been recognized at a national level for a few years now. The education systems of countries around the globe have realized that now it is more important than ever to help students develop key competences to a level that equips them for adult and working life. Acknowledging the importance of acquiring key competences, the Functional Literacy Program (FLP) aims to identify pupils with low proficiency levels in key competences at the early stages of compulsory education in order to get support. For this purpose the FLP develops tests in order to measure knowledge and skills in Greek language and Mathematics. This article aims to discuss the theoretical framework underlying the FLP and present the methodological approach in relation to the procedures employed for developing the tests, for collecting and analysing data and reporting the results. Finally, the paper discusses the contribution of the FLP and future directions.
