Περίληψη

This study is a contribution to the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) concerning the “objects and materials” section of the Greek science curriculum for early childhood education. It approaches the PCK of the aforementioned section from a theoretical and a practical perspective via an application of constructive activities. The research took place at a Salonica kindergarten and it consisted of 10 (45- minutes) weekly sessions in which 25 pupils of average age 5.1 years participated. The identification of their representations concerning materials was accompanied by a teaching proposal, which was completed through creative activities. Special emphasis was placed on the pupils’ conceptual transition from objects and their characteristics to materials and their properties. The connection of the properties of materials with the use of objects helped pupils obtain a deeper and more substantive under standing of the material world and be creatively engaged in transformations of materials and objects in a playful and joyful classroom environment.
