Περίληψη

The study aimed at exploring the formation and the nature of social relations of deaf individuals with hearing peers throughout school years. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten deaf young adults and were analysed with the use of qualitative content analysis. The findings revealed that the families’ socio-economic status, the parents’ attitudes and the attendance of general school had been the main factors that contributed to the development of social relations with hearing peers. These relations were mostly viewed as positive. However, difficulties in the development and/or maintenance of friendship relations with hearing peers were reported. Implications with respect to the social integration of deaf students are discussed.
